A sold out event, organised by Sri Lanka Cricket NSW Inc. and Kingsgrove Sports with the cooperation of Sri Lanka Cricket in Colombo.
Over 400 guests attend this event. The Fans were thrilled to be with their idols and to their credit the Sri Lankan team were also delighted to be at this event supporting the efforts by the Lions Club of Sri Lanka to provide free cataract operations for the needy.
Mark Waugh was the guest speaker and Gavin Robertson was the MC. Tom Moody the Sri Lankan coach was there with his whole family.
Palithia Wijesena President of SLC NSW Inc. gave a welcome address and thanked the many people who had come together to make this event a success, Lion Claude Perera of the Lions Club of Hendala explained the SightFirst project.
All round great and former Captain of Ceylon and the SL Team Manager, Michael Tissera spoke on behalf of Sri Lanka Cricket and there were many old friends who were delighted to see Michael again after many many years. A warm hearted gentleman, Michael was ever willing to be photographed and he even signed a very special autograph for a sick youth. (My personal thanks to Michael.)
Gavin, who has a superbly relaxed style, interviewed SL Captain Marvan Atapattu, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardana on stage. It was a relaxed and at times very funny chat that ensued. Gavin also interviewed Tom Moody and Mark Waugh in the same style. Mark's humour is excellent and some off his reminiscence brought loud laughter from the guest and a huge grin on Murali's face.
The auction off cricketing memorabilia was hotly contested and all items sold for excellent prices. All for a good cause. In his closing remarks, we heard Harry Solomons announce that over A$10,000 was collected from this event for both the Lions Club SightFirst Project in Hendala, Sri Lanka and half the proceeds for tsunami relief work by Sri Lanka Cricket.
It was great to see stalwart Sanath Jayasuriya back on the team. Mahela and Kumar were with their wives and the couples were enjoying the event.
Harry Solomons MD of Kingsgrove Sports, his staff and the Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket NSW Inc. are to be congratulated for a show well done.
