Of Beatles, bell bottoms, mini skirts and flower children

DOUG JONES reports on the Bellbirds Sixties Night

There were hippie look-alikes, an Elvis Presley impersonator, a psychedelic pantsuit, Love & Peace headbands and lots of other attire that harked back to 1960s era. After all, it was the Bellbirds' Sixties night and many of the 150 guests had made valiant attempts to create a time warp to the halcyon days of Beatles and mop tops, bell bottoms and hot pants, mini skirts and flower children. Many of them interestingly bridged the gap with remarkable success.

Striking the first musical note for the evening, the band made up of Darrell de Silva, Randy Peries and Jehan Gunasekera had guests throng the dance floor. As it did in the 60s, the music of that bygone time, so precisely rendered by the band, proved irressitible all round.

The cabaret was a winner with the crowd. Mother-daughter dance duo Bev and Kerry (it was difficult to diffrentiate who was youthful who) kept onlookers enthralled and impatient to join in with their own versions of the pair's fluid gyrations.

Ladies proved more imaginative than their male counterparts in their choice of attire. This made the judges' decision of picking the best dressed a daunting task. From an array of contenders in vintage garb, the popular choice was the mini skirt accentuated by green knee length leather boots and period-piece accessories – a style that characterised those days. The runner-up was the figure-hugging white pantsuit with dark pink braids and buttons, made famous by the late Elvis Presley.

The tasty dinner, dished out by Cheryl's International Cuisine, was enjoyed by all.
