The Sri Lankan community in NSW, got together recently at the Roselea Community Centre in Carlingford to hold a Food Fiesta to raise funds for the post-war development activities taking place currently in Sri Lanka. Twelve Sri Lankan community organisations representing predominantly the Australian residents of Sri Lankan origin in NSW, some local businesses, community groups and many individuals generously supported the event. This event was coordinated by the Australia-Sri Lanka Forum (ASF). It was the second fund raising project, the first being the “Lifeline to North” project through which approximately $6000 was dispatched to provide immediate assistance to the IDP camps, under the "Assist Rebuild Sri Lanka" (ARBS) program launched by ASF. This turned out to be a magnificent event, which raised nearly $11000 in net proceeds through around 15 large food stalls that prepared mostly the authentic Sri Lankan cuisine for the many multicultural Australians that thronged the venue from morning till evening. It was encouraging to notice some politicians also gracing the occasion. All proceeds will be utilised for the “Api Wenuwen Api” building project. The evening session of the food fair was to the accompaniment of live music which was thoroughly enjoyed by music lovers of all ages and cultures. One of the most encouraging features noticed throughout the event was the enormous enthusiasm and dedication shown by the Sri Lankan youth. The organisers are highly appreciative of, and thankful for, the commitment extended by all participating community associations, their associates and all other well wishers who assisted in making this event a success. The ASF will be exploring ways of organising more such events, with the participation of the Sri Lankan community, to uphold the theme of Unity within Diversity.
