Sri Lankan Medical Community in New South Wales Annual Dinner Dance

On Saturday the 26 th June 10 the Sri Lankan Medical Community in New South Wales gathered in their sartorial elegance at the Sydney's Four Season Hotel Grand Ballroom for a charity Ball.

And what an event it turned out to be.

The event commenced on a sombre note with the observance of a minutes' silence as a mark of respect for the late Dr. Upali de Tissera who passed away recently.

A beautifully decorated ballroom awaited the guests who had just been treated to a lilting piano recital and scrumptious canapés. The interior decor set the mood for the night. The MC, Duke Ramachandran commenced proceeding sharp on time and without much ado the band ‘MISTY' took over.... and they did so with gusto.

The first session of dancing was followed by the formal part of the evening. The President of the Sri Lankan Doctors Association Dr. Praneetha Amaranath in a short address, traced the history of migration of Sri Lankan Doctors to Australia and referred to the significant contribution they had made to the medical services of NSW.

She said it is now estimated there are approximately 2000 Doctors of Sri Lankan origin practicing in NSW. She said the profits of this event will be used to assist the needy hospitals and nursing homes in all parts of Sri Lanka.

The Chief guest of the evening was Dr. Andrew Mc Donald MP and the Parliamentary Secretary for Health in NSW. In a short speech he acknowledge the significant contribution the Sri Lankan Doctors made to the delivery of health services in NSW.

‘Misty' a leading band from Sri Lanka, brought in for this event, lifted the entertainment in Sydney to new heights. They engaged the crowd and had 80% on the dance floor throughout the night.

During the dinner break there was a much appreciated performance by three world famous tenors calling themselves ‘Three waiters' who lifted the quality of the event to unprecedent heights and thrilled the guests.

Misty, being human, needed the occasional break and this was filled by the DJ with bailas, the toe tapping walking stick swinging melodies did not give any of the patrons a respite.

The Medicos can always be entrusted to put on a great show and this they did for worthy cause. It is expected this will be a regular event.
