For the third year in succession Lak Saviya Foundation's Charity Dinner 2010 – ALL YOU CAN EAT style sit-down dinner - held on Saturday 13 th March was a huge success. The event was sold out three days before showing the generous community that we live in. Though the conditions outside were muggy, the inside of the Roselea Community Centre provided a warm, cosy and inviting ambience. The decorative lanterns hung on the walls and the wax lanterns on the tables blended very well with the colours of the table tops creating a pleasant atmosphere conducive for a charity dinner. The smell of tasty food stalls comprising hoppers, dosai, rice and curry, desserts and drinks tempted the guests to enjoy a belly-full of dinner to their hearts content. About 100 volunteers with smiley faces were ready to usher the guests to their respective tables, tidy-up the tables for new arrivals, and more importantly to prepare and serve mouth-watering authentic Sri Lankan food for the guests. During the night over 800 guests comprising different ethnicities enjoyed their dinner while contributing to a worthy cause “ Helping the needy help themselves ” - the motto of Lak Saviya Foundation ( www.laksaviya.org.au) . About $12,000 was raised from the event. The Lak Saviya Foundation will use these funds to provide assistance to the needy in Sri Lanka and elsewhere. About $11,000 raised from 2009 Charity Dinner was used to provide: vision to 35 needy people through cataract surgeries with the assistance of RegainSight. a slit lamp to an eye-surgery unit of a rural hospital for screening cataract patients. To date about 1000 patients have been screened. artificial limbs for the 10 differently-abled people through Centre for Handicapped. equipment for differently-abled people. about 7000 books for Kalutara Bodhi Gnana Library - to be distributed to High Schools in Kalutara District. beds for Cardiothoracic Unit of Lady Ridgeway Children's Hospital and other rural hospitals. $1000 for displaced helpless children from Haiti Disaster through Save the Children Australia. A big “Thank You ” to all volunteers for their untiring efforts and last but not least to our guests. “You can make a difference – Together we can make it happen” |
