Sri Jayawardenepura University Alumni Association was set-up Saturday June 26th with a full house and gate crashers too

Report by Cicil Fonseka

All tickets were sold out. 50 people who couldn't buy tickets simply gate crashed, on this auspicies note, the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, Sri Lanka Alumni Association of NSW/ACT was incorporated.

Saturday 26th June 2010 over 200 past pupils and their families of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura University congregated to the Glenhaven Centre in Sydney to setup the much awaited Alumni Association. Past pupils from Canberra and Wollongong were also present to a warm welcome. The attendance of the past pupils has exceeded all expectations. For a University Alumni, 100 people were considered a good result. 150 tickets were sold out in no time and the organisers stopped selling of tickets two weeks prior to the event.

Over 200 people being present on the day means serious gate crashing has taken place! Organisers, please book a hall which can hold 500 for the next Jpura event.

Dr.  Abey Bandaranayake was elected as the inaugural President. Nimal Ratnayake was elected as the Secretary, Nishantha as the Treasurer.

The night was also a very entertaining one. Immediately afterwards a variety show took place. This included entertaining dances, drumming performances and singing by some past pupils of the University.

The Paduru Party which followed the dinner was a real ‘Padura', because all the singing was done by the 200 strong singers in the audience. It was electrifying to listen to 200 people singing in unison without a mike, to the music of a single keyboard. Of course the Paduru Party Song Book was downloaded from where else but, OzLanka!

The University Jokes (all clean) cracked in between songs were most hilarious which vastly improved the night's entertainment. As we all know there aren't many clean University jokes. The event concluded at 11:30 pm just before the clean jokes ran out.

We wish the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, Sri Lanka, Alumni Association of NSW/ACT the very best of luck in her all future endeavours.
