Lanka Village Night 2010 held on 6 March 2010 at the Roselea Community Centre, Carlingford (Sydney)

The Sri Lanka Association started its first Lanka Village Night function in 2005 and the second one was held in 2007. Thereafter the theme was changed to a family night.

This year the committee organised the event as Village Family Night in order to provide the members an opportunity to enjoy the night with their families in an atmosphere of a Sri Lankan village.

The committee did enormous amount of work including attention to detail to create a Sri Lankan atmosphere. The hall was beautifully decorated with banana trees and other trees, which are specific to Sri Lanka, to create a “gamie” atmosphere whilst straw huts with lanterns at the buffet tables gave the appearance of a “gamie Kadie”.

The Association successfully presented this unique concept drawing over 320 people consisting of members, their families and friends to the function. The boutique style dinner with a wide spread of traditional village food such as “manyokka”, “bethel”, “kakuluhal”, “kiri malu”, just to mention few items, was provided to the “gamie kadie” by the Flavour of Ceylon, Parramatta.

It is by no means an easy task for any caterer to provide such a large variety of traditional food for such a large number suitable for the occasion and the Association takes this opportunity to thank Flavour of Ceylon for a job well done.

The band “Rhythm Nights” further enhanced the atmosphere by keeping majority of the crowd young and old on the dance floor throughout the night dancing to the dynamic calypso and baila music. The majority of the ladies were dressed in “reddai hates” whilst the men were in “sarongs”.

Some highlights of the evening were the selection of the Village Queen and the Best Dressed Male and Female and all these happened without any interruption to dancing.

A big thank you goes to the committee, their spouses and to the events coordinator Niranjan de Alwis for their dedication, hard work and attention to detail in creating a Sri Lankan village type surrounding and providing such an entertaining night. The attendance and participation of members in such larger numbers created a dynamic and a warm atmosphere that made the night a truly memorable one.
