THE FEAST OF ST. SEBASTIAN CELEBRATED AT THE MULGOA SHRINE
Report prepared by Joy Perera, on behalf of the Sri Lankan NSW Catholic Association

The feast St Sebastian was celebrated at Mulgoa Shrine on Sunday 20 February 2011 with the participation of around 250 members of Sri Lankan Catholic community of all ethnic Sri Lankan communities, Sinhalese, Tamil and Burghers living in Sydney.

St Sebastian was a soldier in the Roman Army around 300 AD, who defended the Christians from persecution and became a Christian himself and was martyred for it.  He was shot with arrows and left for dead.  He is the patron Saint for protection from epidemic diseases and is also the protector of Cities and Countries from calamity.

St. Sebastian’s feast is celebrated in Sri Lanka in grand style notably in places such as Moratuwa and Kandana.

Fr. Jude Nicholas, the Chaplain for the Sri Lankan Catholics in NSW, in his sermon, spoke of the vital role played by the early Christian Martyrs who by the spilling of their blood propagated the Christian Faith.

There was active participation of the youth in the readings, prayers, and singing.  The Choir comprised of the young and not-so young sang in beautiful harmony.  The final hymn- San Sebastian Muniduni brought about a nostalgic feeling among the older folk who have heard it in Sri Lanka.

A fellowship followed after the mass in a festive mood with everyone partaking in the food and drink shared by all.
